Yes a little cross training with skateboarding as a similar type of movement but I try and play a lot of golf…not so much for body training or improvement but it helps my mind. My fit ball is the best thing for me to have on the road.
Do you have an interest in extreme sports and if so which ones? What about them appeals to you?Motocross stands out. I’ve always had a thing about bikes which I think was passed down from my dad and I got to ride a lot more when i was younger. I still get a kick out of the feeling of freedom and adrenalin you get when you open up that throttle!
Do you have any other special skills apart from surfing?I’m skilled at sleeping anywhere! I can take a seat on a plane and I’ll be asleep in 10 minutes. I think I’m a very good ping pong player as well!
How do you take care of your body when you’re travelling, touring, etc?as above - fit ball, roller, vitamins

I just try and eat good food with a well rounded diet covering all the necessities. Plenty of electrolytes during the event.
What was the most exciting moment for you in 2011?There were a lot but one that sticks out right now, probably more as the most significant moment was the win over Joel Parkinson in the 1/4 finals at the Hurley Lower’s Pro. We had an awesome battle in the round before, he had a dig at me I got fired up and got to take him out in the next one!
How do you prepare mentally for an event?Try to cut out as many distractions as possible and focus on my equipment, body, the location and be ready to enjoy the moment.
What conditions do you prefer to surf in? Are those the conditions that suit your style best?I would probably prefer to surf equally as much in perfect J-Bay as I would in perfect Teahupoo. Two very contrasting wave types but I think that sums up my style best also.

I’m not sure where he finds the fire but he had a stellar year and I take my hat off to him.
What advice would you have for anyone getting into surfing over summer this year?Find a good instructor and take a lesson to begin, learn the basics and always go bigger rather then smaller on your board - it makes it easier and more fun!
If you had to give someone one tip on how to become a better surfer what would that be?
Make sure you are on the right board for your level and don’t just ride something because it looks cool or the pro’s are on it.
